Lake Co. Sept. 11 observances

Several area groups will observe the seventh anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorists attacks on Thursday:

•The Libertyville High School Student Council will recognize the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks with the annual flag set for 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the school, 708 W. Park Ave. Community members can participate. Additionally, at 11:30 a.m., the flag, which has flown nonstop for one year above the campus, will be ceremoniously lowered and replaced with a new flag for the next year. The retired flag will be presented that morning to the family of the late Harry Croon, a retired FBI agent and a former member of the school security staff. To participate in the vigil, sign up in the student center or call (847) 327-7007.

•The Vernon Hills Park District has 5,000 daffodil bulbs to plant as part of its Fields of Gold event. Hawthorn Elementary District 73 schools will participate by having school children walk over to the two sites and plant the bulbs. The children will begin arriving at 9 a.m. on Aspen Drive near the Family Aquatic Center and also at Century Park across from Hawthorn North school. Event is expected to last 2 hours.

•Winthrop Harbor Fire Department hosts a 9/11 observance and dedication of a new ladder truck at 7 p.m. at 9/11 Park, 600 Kirkwood.

•Lake Forest police and fire departments perform a remembrance ceremony from 9 to 9:30 a.m. The ceremony will be in Market Square, off Western Avenue, north of Deerpath Road.
