Aurora warns residents of suspicious sales people in the area

Aurora police are warning residents about reports of people asking suspicious questions while claiming to sell educational books door-to-door in neighboring communities

Although police have not received any such reports in Aurora, they say they have heard of such instances in North Aurora, Rochelle and Yorkville.

Police spokesman Dan Ferrelli said the subjects are described as two men and a woman, all with heavy eastern European accents. The woman is described as tall and blonde; one of the men is described as tall, blond and in his 20s.

Reports indicate one of them may show up alone or with one of the other subjects. They many times ask personal questions involving the names of neighbors, the number of children in each household, their ages, and other personal information under an apparent guise of selling educational materials.

"Apparently, the lines of questioning and the subjects' demeanors have made residents feel uneasy," Ferrelli said.

Police are encouraging anyone who comes in contact with similar circumstances to call them at (630) 859-1700.

They also are reminding residents to never let solicitors into homes and never share information pertaining to when they, or their children, are, or are not, at home.

Police said Aurora residents should take note of the city ordinance involving peddlers, canvassers, and solicitors that requires anyone engaging in those activities to register with the city clerk and wear their city registration and business identification.
