Benet (0-1) at Montini (1-0)
Nonconference
Game time: 1 p.m. Saturday
Last year: Montini 33, Benet 0.
Last week: Oswego 32, Benet 7; Montini 34, Sacred Heart-Griffin 31.
Outlook: These former West Suburban Catholic Conference rivals are 1-1 in the renewed series. Benet's spread offense is still a work in progress, but Redwings coach Gary Goforth anticipated quirks in alignment and execution coming in. Now, to fix them, starting with the ground game. Goforth got good work from defensive end Victor Sadauskas, safety Mike Vanchieri and linebackers Mike Nawrocki and Ryan Mitchell, who made 8 solo tackles with 3 assists, a sack and a tackle for loss. The Redwings will need all hands on deck Saturday. Montini gained an astounding 640 yards of offense while coming back from a 21-0 deficit to win on Tom DiCristina's 1-yard quarterback sneak behind guard Mike Size and tackle Carl Meister. The heroes were plentiful and included linebacker Ryan Gorrell, back Matt Sloan and receivers Jeff Spokas and Brendan Shannon, who caught 11 passes for 183 yards. But the Broncos wouldn't have required the greatest comeback in school history if they hadn't self-destructed on early deep drives, or stopped Griffin defensively.
