Norris Center to host 'Invitational' exhibition

The Norris Gallery in the Norris Cultural Arts Center, 1040 Dunham Road in St. Charles, presents "Invitational" art exhibition. Local artists were invited to display their work and share their talents at the Norris Gallery.

A display of talent, the "Invitational" exhibit includes a medley of visual textures and colors to delight the viewer and engage their imaginations. Artworks on exhibit have been created in a variety of media from traditional photography to gauche and ink wash to copper etchings.

The "Invitational" artists are Shirley Calby, Sandy Frigolett, Tina Leverenzzi, Geri Greenman, Nancy Staszak, and Lennox Dunbar from Scotland. Special guests also include the students, staff, and invited artists of the Printmaking Department from Gray's School of Art at Robert Gordon University, Arberdeen, Scotland. Collectively, these limited edition prints from Gray's School of Art (Scotland) represent a body of work titled, "Portfolio X". For the Gray's School of Art, the "Portfolio" project seeks to provide students with a firsthand understanding of the curating, production and dissemination of the limited-edition prints, producing work for a limited edition box set and for exhibition. The project examines both traditional and new supports for the production of multiples of work in contemporary print form, expanding the breadth of practice within the field, and creating a conglomerate of eclectic visual interpretations as well as a unique portable exhibition.

The show runs through Sept. 25. There will be an artists' reception from 2 to 4 p.m. Sept. 14. The public is invited.

The Norris Gallery is giving special recognition to friend, artist, and Norris Art Gallery committee member Shirley Calby, who passed away on July 7. She was an accomplished photographer with photographs exhibited in a number of art shows, exhibitions across the Fox Valley Area, and a photograph in the Norris Permanent Art Collection. Her dedication and friendship will be missed by all of the lives she has touched.

Calby demonstrated an unwavering passion for the arts and in particular, for its influence within the town of St. Charles. A graduate from Wheaton College in Norton, Mass. with a bachelor's degree in English, her career began at the Family Circle Magazine and Esquire Magazine as a copy writer in New York. Locally she was employed by the Kane County Chronicle as the arts and entertainment editor and at Elgin Community College in the public relations department. She was a former member of the Restorations of Kane County and a current member of the Norris Art Gallery. The Norris Gallery extends their gratitude to her family who has graciously lent her marvelous photographs to be part of the "Invitational" exhibit.
