Superintendent of Township High School District 214 David R. Schuler was elected to serve a three-year term on the governing board of the American Association of School Administrators, a professional organization for school superintendents and other school system leaders nationwide.

Schuler, as a member of the board, will help set the policy agenda for the association, which is comprised almost entirely of active school superintendents drawn from seven geographic regions across the United States.

• Yvonne Harris, the newly appointed dean of Harper College's math and science department, was named a Leadership Fellow by the National Center for Science and Civic Engagements.

Harris, who is part of the center's first ever group of Fellows, was honored for her leadership and commitment to the improvement of science, technology, mathematics and engineering education. She was one of only 76 Fellows chosen from the 1,300 nominees nationally.

• Palatine High School junior Alyssa Hofelt attended the 2008 Leadership University, sponsored by LeadAmerica, at DePaul University in Chicago this summer.

Leadership University is a college-accredited invitational leadership program for academically talented and promising leaders from across the United States and internationally. Students face real-life situations in which they learn specific and tangible leadership skills, such as team building, collaboration, negotiation, creative thinking and problem solving.

At Palatine High School, Hofelt is involved in student Council and choir, writes for the school newspaper and is a member of the Girls' golf and badminton teams.

• Elizabeth E. Pyra of Barrington accepted membership in the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and will be honored during an induction convocation this fall on the campus of St. Louis University. The National Society of Collegiate Scholars is a member of the Association of College Honor Societies; membership is by invitation only, based on grade point average and class standing.

• Congratulations to Jeff Sharples of Bartlett, who achieved his first ever hole-in-one on the eighth hole at Apple Orchard Golf Course in Bartlett. Sharples, who plays Apple Orchard on a daily basis, was used a seven iron on the 110-yard hole. Chris Riley and John Getta witnessed the feat.

• Mount Prospect State Farm Insurance agent Bernie Majewski recently celebrated 40 years of service during a luncheon at the State Farm agency field office in Arlington Heights. During his career, Majewski has earned many prestigious State Farm awards including the Legion of Honor, Bronze Tablet and Silver Scroll. A luncheon, hosted by his Mount Prospect staff, was also held at the Pam Court Restaurant in Arlington Heights to further celebrate this 40-year milestone.
