Camp tackles strokes:

Alexian Brothers Hospital Network will sponsor a camp on strokes Friday through Sunday at YMCA Camp Algonquin. Survivors and caregivers will have an opportunity to speak with others in a safe and nurturing environment about challenges, triumphs and solutions. Retreat and Refresh Stroke Camp is a non-profit organization committed to improving the life of stroke survivors and their caregivers. PTO holds fundraiser:

The Aptakisic-Tripp Elementary District 102 PTO is holding its Party-In-The-Park family program from 4:30-8 p.m. Friday at Meridian Middle School. Proceeds benefit the district's Community Organized Drug Education Program, which teaches children how to make wise lifestyle choices. The program is 100 percent funded by the PTO. Offerings include carnival games and inflatables, DJ, music and dancing, food for purchase from area restaurants. Hip-hop poet reads at Oakton:

Northbrook native Kevin Coval will read selections from his latest book at 6 p.m. Sept. 10 as part of the Chicago Writers Series at Oakton Community College, 1600 E. Golf Road, Des Plaines. Play golf for a cure:

The Des Plaines Park District is hosting Rally for the Cure, a breast cancer awareness campaign and fundraiser, Sept. 27 at Lake Park Golf Course, 1015 Howard Ave. The entry fee is $20 per player, which includes golf, a pink ribbon golf pin and a subscription to Golf for Women magazine. Proceeds go to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation. Registration forms are available at all park district facilities and at www.desplainesparks.org.
