An 11-year-old Winfield girl struck by a car remains hospitalized and the circumstances remain under investigation, police said Friday.

Officials said a 25-year-old Winfield man was driving the car that struck the girl, who police wouldn't identify, on Winfield Scott Drive in Winfield. The man told police he was unable to avoid hitting the girl who was in the road at the time of the collision. The incident occurred about 7 a.m. Thursday.

No citations have been issued, police said.

According to a release from the police department, the driver was northbound on Winfield Scott Drive near the intersection of Heather Lane. Investigators said the collision occurred in the middle of the roadway and the girl suffered "incapacitating injuries."

Police did not have an update on her condition, other than to say she remained at Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield.
