Teens charged with robbing Huntley bank
Two suburban teens have been arrested and charged with robbing a Huntley bank and attempting to hold up a second bank in Union, police said.
Justin Fasel, 17, and Matthew Reno, 18, both from Hinckley, were in custody at the McHenry County jail Friday, unable to post $400,000 bonds.
The two were arrested at about 3:30 p.m. Thursday, charged with armed robbery and theft over $300 in connection with the March 10 holdup of the Castle Bank in Huntley.
They also face attempted armed robbery charges stemming from a failed stickup March 24 at First Midwest Bank Trust in Union.
In the Huntley case, police said a masked man approached a bank teller, displayed a handgun and demanded money before escaping to a waiting car with several thousand dollars.
Most of that money had been spent by the time of Thursday's arrests, Huntley Police Chief John Perkins said.
Each suspct could face up to 30 years in prison if convicted of the armed robbery charges.
Perkins said officers have been working leads on the case since the robberies took place. The big break came, he said, when FBI agents in Chicago received a tip and forwarded it to Huntley officers.
"The cooperative effort between federal, state and local agencies was phenomenal in this investigation," Perkins said. "Our officers really worked this case hard and it's satisfying to come up with an arrest."
He would not disclose what the tip was that led to the arrests.
