5K walk/run in Glen Ellyn for youth ministry

Labor Day will be a day off from work, but not a day off from working out for hundreds in Glen Ellyn.

More than 500 are expected to participate in St. Petronille's 9th annual 5K Run/Walk for Youth Ministry at 8 a.m. Monday morning.

The run/walk will kick off and end at St Petronille parish, at 420 Glenwood Ave. in Glen Ellyn. The route also will take athletes through the Illinois Prairie Path, Hoffman Park in Wheaton and the streets of Glen Ellyn.

"We're hoping for good weather, record participation and a fun event," Race Co-Director Jim Markby said.

Preregistration prices are $20 for adults and $10 for kids younger than 10. On Monday morning, admission is $25 for adults and $15 for kids.

When the annual event started, there were about 200 runners. But ever since organizers put all funds toward the youth ministry and moved the event to Labor Day, participation has more than doubled. The event even attracts many St. Petronille graduates.

Markby said each year race leaders add something new, like awards, water tables, amenities, a better course and different vendors.

The parish's youth ministry travels to many states to help people who have been affected by natural disasters or poverty. The group also organizes events throughout the year to help local families.

"There are costs that are required, and we have shifted our profits to these ministries for those causes," Markby said. "We have been very efficient, costs are low and profits are high."
