Preview: Fenton

A little adversity might go a long way for Fenton's football team.

Between graduation losses, transfers to other schools and expected returners not coming out for the team, it hasn't been an ideal off-season for the Bison.

But with key components in place, a run at the Metro Suburban Conference title and a fourth playoff appearance in the last six years remains on the to-do list.

"We're only going to have about 30 or so players, so we have to stay healthy," said Fenton coach Mark Farrell. "But I feel pretty good about how we might do."

While the Bison bring back 11 starting positions from last season, four returning players will be on both sides of the ball.

That includes quarterback Ricky Prignano, who also will play in the secondary after picking off 3 passes in 2007. Prignano, who will miss the first two games of the season, threw for 918 yards and 5 touchdowns and rushed for 416 yards and 8 touchdowns.

For a second straight season the Bison don't boast a dominant rusher. Fullback D.J. Anderson rushed for 316 yards and Tyler Sabala added 175. With newcomer Tyrell McGee also in the mix, Fenton hopes to thrive through a mix of different backfield looks.

"We just need to move the sticks and eliminate mistakes," Farrell said.

On both sides of the ball a line led by returners Francisco Ochoa and Tommy Garza is a team strength. The unit goes seven or eight deep with talent.

Garza, Carlos Gomez and Anderson combined for 108 tackles last year as they gained valuable defensive experience.

That experience - and an extreme emphasis on staying healthy - will be crucial.

"If things fall into place I think we can be a good team," Farrell said.

Last season marked the first time since 2003 that Fenton did not have a 1,000-yard rusher.

Head coach: Mark Farrell (third year, 13-9).

2007 record: 4-5, 3-3 Metro Suburban Conference.
