Ravens may call on rookie Flacco earlier than desired

Just over a week before facing the Cincinnati Bengals in the season opener, the Baltimore Ravens still haven't selected their starting quarterback. And there is no guarantee the issue will be settled after the Ravens hosts the Atlanta Falcons in tonight's final presaeason game.

The Ravens don't even know which quarterback will play against the Falcons, who have already settled on rookie Matt Ryan as their starter.

Kyle Boller, Troy Smith and top draft pick Joe Flacco remain very much in the running to take over the job that became vacated when McNair retired after two seasons with Baltimore.

Ravens first-year coach John Harbaugh would prefer to keep the untested Flacco on the bench, but the problem with that plan is that Boller and Smith are not healthy.

A viral infection kept Smith out of last week's game against St. Louis, and the former Heisman Trophy winner hadn't recovered by Tuesday. Boller, meanwhile, has been sidelined for more than a week with a sore shoulder that doesn't appear to be getting any better and which many fear may be career-ending.

And Flacco? Well, he played the entire game against the Rams and just might have to do it again.

Flacco threw the team's lone touchdown pass of the preseason last week in a 24-10 loss, but his performance was far from flawless.

"He can build on everything," Harbaugh said. "I think some specific things would be to be more accurate and to get the ball out quickly. Across the board, just continue to improve."

Packers' Jolly has court date: Green Bay defensive lineman Johnny Jolly Jr. faces a Sept. 16 court date on a felony drug possession charge, according to court records.

Jolly, 25, was arrested July 8 in Houston for possession of at least 200 grams of a controlled substance, a second-degree felony, according to court documents. He posted $10,000 bond and was released. He was originally due in court Wednesday, but that date was reset for next month.

Jaguars' Harvey ends holdout: Defensive end Derrick Harvey ended a 33-day holdout Wednesday by signing a five-year, $23.8 million contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Harvey was the last first-round draft pick to sign, a lengthy holdout that frustrated coach Jack Del Rio and left the former Florida standout behind in preparation for the regular season.

The eighth overall selection in April, Harvey was expected to bolster a pass rush that struggled to pressure quarterbacks last season. But he missed all of training camp and the first three preseason games.
