Success of surge in Iraq is questionable

A recent edition of the Daily Herald contained several articles and other mentions of how the Iraq surge has "worked" and that we are now "winning" a war that was lost only two years ago.

Does this justify this war of aggression? I think not. We have killed 600,000 Iraqis, which has caused justifiable anger and hatred for us.

There are many examples of "surges" working throughout history.

North Korea's surge into the south was at first a success until it was beaten back by Douglas MacArthur. Then MacArthur's surge north to the Yalu River was beaten back by the Red Chinese.

Hitler's surge into Poland was also a "success" at first, but ended with the monster Hitler putting a bullet into his head.

I submit that the George W. Bush surge will also become a temporary victory and that we cannot control the Middle East with a bayonet. We must use creative diplomacy and evenhanded policy initiatives to create a just and peaceful Middle East.

If, however, I am wrong and the surge has won the war, then I see no reason for our troops to stay any longer.

Right or wrong, I believe our troops must be withdrawn and a massive aid package should be given to Iraq to help this destroyed nation.

An apology might be in order also.
