Schaumburg police, fire standards change
Schaumburg trustees Tuesday approved changes to the village's entry-level requirements for firefighters and police officers, intended to strengthen their pool of candidates. Among the changes - most too subtle to be easily noticed by the public - were raising the maximum age for new prospects from 35 to 40, as well as placing greater weight on military experience in the ranking of candidates. Village Manager Ken Fritz said that while police and fire departments are recruiting from a shrinking pool of interested candidates, the new changes are intended to raise, and not lower, their hiring standards.
