Wheaton theater plan draws a crowd

Approximately 200 people crowded the Wheaton Grand Theatre Monday night to share their opinions on whether the Wheaton Park District should finance approximately $18 million in alternate revenue bonds to restore and operate the deteriorating venue.

Park District Executive Director Mike Benard said the city of Wheaton would also donate $250,000 to start the project, if it is approved.

Benard said the project fits in perfectly with the park district's mission to create recreation for residents and families.

The meeting drew residents, Wheaton Chamber of Commerce members and area politicians, the majority supporting the measure.

Officials from Arlington Heights, including Mayor Arlene Mulder, also showed support, saying a restored theater could equal similar financial success to the Metropolis Performing Arts Centre in Arlington Heights.

Some residents, however, voiced concern that the park district and the city could be using the money for retiring debts, lowering taxes or other city projects.

Others that favored the idea of bringing major art performances to Wheaton still worried that the theater might not generate its projected revenue every year before the bonds are paid off.

Park board President Phillip Luetkehans said all decisions regarding the Wheaton Grand Theatre will be made during public board meetings.

He said the board hopes to vote on the matter within the next several months.
