Success is fighting changes to Title X

I am writing to thank Congressman Kirk for his vigilant defense of a woman's right to full, accurate and unbiased information from her doctor.

Recently it was reported that President Bush was considering revising the Title X health care rules. Title X is a federal program providing family planning services and advice to poor women across the country.

Title X clinics are already expressly forbidden from using government funds to provide abortions, but President Bush was considering going further. He planned to instate a "gag rule" provision that would bar federal funds from any clinic that so much as advised a woman of all her options.

The net result would have been thousands of poor women being denied quality health care and many clinics being forced to close.

Kirk led a group of 11 moderate Republicans and called on President Bush to keep the current, well established regulations. Their plea worked and the current rules were left in place.
