McHenry Co. car fire appears to be arson case

A car fire in McHenry County now appears to be arson after further investigation by the McHenry County Sheriff's Department.

Evidence suggests that a 1996 Saturn SL parked in the 8000 block of Randall Road near Crystal Lake was intentionally set on fire, possibly to cover up a crime.

The car was parked in the area while the driver and a passenger went fishing nearby about 2 p.m. Aug. 13. About 4:45 p.m., a witness spotted six teenagers walking down the road near the car. An hour later, the Saturn caught fire.

Police found a window on the Saturn smashed by a rock. An empty case was found in shrubbery near the fire. The case was in the vehicle when the driver left to go fishing and contained a silver and black Behringer microphone and a set of headphones. Both items were missing.

Police ask anyone with information to call (800) 762-7867. Information that leads to an arrest may result in a $1,000 reward.
