Tollway lane closures:

One southbound lane of the Tri-State Tollway between Stearns School Road and Milwaukee Avenue will close at 10 p.m. today, for erosion control work. The lane will reopen at 5 a.m. Sunday, with the same closure planned Sunday and Monday following the same schedule. Also, one lane in each direction between Washington Street and Stearns School Road will close at 8 p.m. today for bridge work. A second northbound lane will close at 10 p.m. and several full, 15-minute closures of the northbound lanes and entrance ramp from eastbound Grand Avenue are scheduled after midnight. All northbound lanes will reopen at 5 a.m. and the southbound lane at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Temple hosts celebration:

The Hindu Mandir of Lake County will conduct a celebration for "Krishna Janmastimi," or the birth of Lord Krishna, today at the temple, 20444 W. Peterson Road, Grayslake. The program begins at 10:30 a.m. with prayers, devotional songs and rituals. A cultural program will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. followed by additional prayers, devotional singing and rituals. Sky Soldiers hit the road:

The Sky Soldiers of the 173rd Airborne Brigade, which first went into service in 1917, will hold a motorcade along Route 173, which was recently named the 173rd Airborne Brigade Highway. The brigade served in both world wars, Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq. It is the only unit to perform combat parachute assaults into enemy territory in Vietnam and Iraq. Participants will gather at 8:30 a.m. in Zion and head west to the end of the highway in Rockford. Stops are planned along the to thank supporters.

Stevenson grounds open:

The grounds of the Lake County Forest Preserves' Adlai E. Stevenson Historic Home on St. Mary's Road south of Route 60 in Mettawa opened to the public Friday. Five exhibit panels have been places around the site to provide historical details about Stevenson and his connection to the property near the Des Plaines River. Visitors can learn about noted events that took place there. This fall, one-hour public tours will be offered inside the newly-renovated home. Tours are available at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. on Sept. 7, 21 and Oct. 26. Reservations are required at (847) 968-3321 or visit www.lcfpd.org (preserves and facilities).

Dist. 103 preschool screening:

Lincolnshire-Prairie View Elementary District 103 will offer its fall preschool screening from 8 to 11 a.m. Oct. 3 at Sprague School, 2425 Riverwoods Road, Lincolnshire. The district conducts the screening for 3- and 4-year-old children for whom parents have concerns about gross or fine motor skills, speech and language or conceptual development. Vision and hearing screenings also are offered. The screening is open to children who live in the district. Reserve an appointment before Sept. 26 by calling the district's student services office at (847) 295-4030.

Mayor to hail Mundelein chief:

Longtime Mundelein Police Chief Raymond J. Rose will receive a distinguished service award from the mayor during Monday's village board meeting. The meeting is set to begin at 7 p.m. at the main fire station, 1000 N. Midlothian Road.

She's perfect at Warren:

Jaime Wilt nailed a perfect score of 36 on the ACT college-entrance exam that she took in April. Wilt, a senior, scored 34 the first time she took the ACT. "My parents were preparing me for it not being as good as my first try," Wilt said. "I didn't expect (the perfect score)." Wilt is captain of Warren's girls swimming team. She visited Marquette University, the University of Illinois and Indiana University over the summer. It's the third consecutive year Warren is reporting a student scored a perfect 36 on the ACT.
