Fire causes $100,000 damage to Oakbrook Terrace restaurant

The Redstone American Grill in Oakbrook Terrace is expected to remain closed today after a late Friday night fire caused about $100,000 damage to the building.

When firefighters arrived at about 11 p.m. Friday, they saw smoke rising from the roof of the restaurant, located near the intersection of Butterfield Road and 22nd Street.

Officials with the York Center Fire Protection District said it appears that one of the building's air-conditioning units malfunctioned and started to overheat. The heat then caused roofing material around the unit to catch fire.

The restaurant, which was open at the time the fire started, had to be evacuated, officials said. No injuries were reported.

Fire officials said the blaze, which was brought under control in about 30 minutes, was contained to the roof.

Repairs will need to be made to the building before it can reopen, officials said. A manager at the restaurant said it's unknown when the restaurant will reopen.

A call to a spokeswoman for Redstone American Grill Inc. wasn't immediately returned.
