Forest Preserve District of Kane County presents 'roadside botany'

Join naturalist Valerie Blaine, nature programs manager for the Forest Preserve District of Kane County, for a botanical expedition in search of roadside wildflowers and weeds during the upcoming nature program, "Roadside Botany."

"We'll explore interior roads in forest preserves and search trail sides for flowers and seeds and all things green and growing," Blaine said. "You'll learn to identify the common plants that grace ditches and easements and other abandoned spots."

Participants will discuss the rich folklore associated with these plants and discuss their role as edibles and medicinals."

A morning session is offered from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Dick Young Forest Preserve, off Nelson Road west of Batavia. An evening session will take place from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 20. at LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve, off Dean Street, west of Randall Road in St. Charles.

You can register for one or both of these free programs by calling (847) 741-8350. Additional details on forest preserve district nature programs are available at the Web site, www.kaneforest.com.
