U-46 posts slight ACT gains
ACT scores improved slightly this year in Elgin Area School District U-46, according to data released this week by the Iowa-based testing group.
The composite score for the U-46 graduates - who took the exam during their junior year of high school - rose from 19.2 in 2007 to 19.3 in 2008. Statewide, the average this year was 20.4. Nationally, it was 21.1.
A review of scores in reading, math and science revealed one- to two-tenth point gains for test takers from the district's five high schools. English scores remained at 18.5 both years.
The ACT is scored on a 36-point scale.
Superintendent Jose Torres said he was "pleased" to see the slight increase in scores, but warned that U-46 "must encourage more students to take Advanced Placement courses so they are better prepared for postsecondary education and training."
Bartlett, Elgin, Streamwood and Larkin high schools have all failed to meet state standards in reading and math for the past five years.
In May, the district approved federal structuring plans for four out of its five mainstream high schools.
By doing so, they will stave off further state and federal intervention for at least a year.
Libraries and computer labs in failing high school will now be used to support student learning beyond the school day, Chief Academic Officer Barb Bonner said.
To help with the transition from middle to high school, students identified "at risk" for academic failure had the opportunity to participate in a bridge program this summer.
Teachers will also develop and implement common assessments in each subject, Bonner said.
