Briefs: Out-of-state DUIs targeted

An initiative to allow law enforcement officials to work with other states to target repeat DUI offenders was signed into law by the governor Monday. Senate Bill 2494 began as legislation sponsored by Democratic state Rep. Paul Froehlich of Schaumburg. The new law upgrades from a misdemeanor to a Class 4 felony any new drunken driving offense in Illinois by anyone already convicted and having a revoked or suspended license for DUI from another jurisdiction or state. The bill was passed unanimously by the state House in May and takes effect immediately.

Man accused in NJ scam

A Northwest suburban man is among three accused of swindling churchgoers of $500,000. Robert Schroy, whose most recent listed address is in Palatine, is being sued by the New Jersey Bureau of Securities, which accuses him of using prayer conference calls to solicit investment money from churchgoers and then transferring that money to personal accounts to purchase electronics, vacations and furniture. The bureau said the fraud happened from March to October 2007. Schroy is a board member of Jesus Rallies in Chicagoland Inc. and believed to be president of a Nevada company called Worldwide Marketing Network Inc., the bureau also said. One of the two others sued, David A. Talbot of New Jersey, is seeking to be appointed as the financial adviser for former NFL star Michael Vick, whose entanglement in a dog-fighting ring sent him to bankruptcy court and federal prison. When reached Monday via telephone, Schroy declined comment, referring questions to an attorney who could not be reached.

Man dies of car crash injuries

A man died early Monday, two weeks after he was struck by a car while crossing a busy Des Plaines street, police said. Anthony Gloriana, 64, of 770 Pearson St. in Des Plaines, was pronounced dead at 3:35 a.m. at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, police Cmdr. Dan Niemann said. Gloriana had the right of way at 1:35 p.m. July 28 while crossing north on Pearson Street across Miner Street, police said. A woman driving a 1995 Pontiac Bonneville north on Miner struck him, and paramedics took him to Lutheran General, where he has remained since the crash. The driver, 69-year-old Betty Andrews, was cited with failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk, police said. A court date is set for Sept. 2 in Skokie.
