CN/EJ&E merger needs long view
Your article ("Fighting Over Trains," July 13) was some of the most balanced and insightful reporting I've seen on the long-simmering fight over the EJ&E.
Looking at history and understanding the outcome of other railroad deals helps put this one into perspective, especially with what needs to get done.
Probably the most illuminating quote - one that should be instructive for all parties involved in the EJ&E fight - comes from the All Aboard Ohio representative when he recalled his experience in dealing with the railroads: "(We) didn't treat the railroad as the enemy," the coalition reached significant concessions. "There was something for everyone to gain," he said.
Suburban politicians fighting CN and its purchase of the EJ&E should take note. Read the more sober assessments of this deal, including the Daily Herald's article, and you will see that this deal is likely to be approved by the Surface Transportation Board.
Knowing this, doesn't it make sense to stop vilifying CN and get the best deal possible for the constituents you say you represent?
