Briefs: New care package campaign

Village Bank & Trust in Arlington Heights is partnering with Operation Support our Troops Illinois to coordinate a care package campaign for servicemen and women. Donations, recommended items and letters of thanks addressed to "Dear American Hero" will be collected at the bank through Labor Day. The collection boxes are in place at all four Village Bank & Trust locations: 234 W. Northwest Highway, 150 E. Rand Road, 311 S. Arlington Heights Road and 1845 E. Rand Road. Parking plan heard

A plan for a new parking lot at the Salvation Army property in Des Plaines today goes before the city's community development committee. Houses near the building at 653 Dempster St. were purchased and demolished for the new lot. The public meeting will be held at 10 a.m. in Room 101 at city hall, 1420 Miner St. Other topics to be discussed include churches in commercial districts and a proposed parking lot addition at the mosque at 480 Potter Road.

Rollover on Rt. 53

Illinois State Police said one person was injured in a rollover accident on Illinois Route 53 at Schaumburg Road early Tuesday. Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Jeff Grendzinski said the van was heading south when a steering mechanism on the van failed. The van veered out of the control and off the side of the road at about 8:15 a.m., he said. The van rolled over when it struck the side of the ditch. The vehicle was resting on its roof when emergency vehicles arrived. The unnamed driver was taken to Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village with non-life-threatening injuries. The accident was cleared up around 10:30 a.m.

Hotel groundbreaking

To celebrate work starting on a new Hampton Inn and Suites in Deer Park, a special groundbreaking ceremony has been scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday. The 104-room hotel is being built on 2 acres in the Deer Park Office Center off Lake-Cook Road between Deer Park Boulevard and Quentin Road. Work on the hotel is expected to be completed by May 2009.
