Neighbors in the News

The Literary Review Book Club of Des Plaines named Julie Coburn director for the 2008-09 season. Coburn replaces the retiring Sue D'Hondt, who served as the club's director for 10 years.

Sponsored by the Friends of the Des Plaines Public Library, the club will host luncheon/book reviews Oct. 10, Nov. 14, Feb. 13, March 12 and May 8, at the Des Plaines Elks Club. For membership information, call (847) 635-6780 or (847) 824-2576.

• The Chicago Northwest Suburban Alumnae Club of Alpha Gamma Delta received a Community Service Award during a recent international convention held in Texas. This group of ladies organizes and presents the Spring Showcase of Arts and Crafts to benefit the Samuel A. Kirk School in Palatine each year. In May, $14,800 was given to Parents and Teachers of Handicapped Students for purchasing enrichment equipment. The ladies also assist with the JDRF team kickoff luncheon and handle the registration area for the Busse Woods site for the Ron Santo Walk-for-the-Cure held in October. Other community service projects are also completed during the year. The alumnae club has also endowed a scholarship through the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation awarded to a graduate student each year.

• Nita Dietz of Streamwood, Dennis Wegrzyn of Elk Grove Village and Steve Hirsch of Streamwood all made a hole-in-one at Bartlett Hills Golf Course over the past several weeks. Dietz aced the 130-yard 18th hole using a nine wood. Wegrzyn used a five iron on hole 11, while Hirsch's ace came from using a pitching wedge on hole five, which is 135 yards.

• The Men's Club of Congregation Beth Judea of Long Grove elected the following new officers for 2008-09: Gary Malkin and Jim MacCrindle, co-presidents; Dave Alhadeff, secretary; Dave Granoff, membership/communications; Marc Chappe, director; Glen Gardberg, treasurer; and Fred Rabinowitz, programming/fundraising.

Beth Judea's Men's Club is part of the Federation of Jewish Men's Clubs whose charter and mission is to enrich the lives of Jewish men and their families through various educational programs, social action, mitzvot and community involvement.
