Orton sharp, Grossman bounces back
Kyle Orton looked sharp for the second straight practice during Thursday afternoon's abbreviated session, which was cut short by 30 minutes, while Rex Grossman made a nice recovery after a slow start.
In Grossman's first go-round, he completed just 2 of 5 in 7-on-7, throwing behind Marty Booker and high to Greg Olsen and Desmond Clark. Orton, working with the second team on Thursday, started 4-for-4, connecting twice each with rookie Earl Bennett and Mike Hass.
In the next session, 7-on-7 in the red zone, Grossman completed 5 of 6 for 3 touchdowns, i each to Olsen, Devin Hester and Clark. His only incompletion came on a pass that Olsen caught, but officials ruled he failed to stay in bounds at the back of the end zone. In the same format, Orton completed 2 of 4, including a TD to Hass.
Neither quarterback was intercepted, although Orton fumbled a snap from center that the defense recovered.
In 11-on-11, backup safety Josh Gattis came up quick and smacked Matt Forte a bit too hard on a running play, drawing an annoyed stare from the rookie.
