Musical groups to join together for anniversary concert

A song written especially for the village of Buffalo Grove will debut this weekend at an anniversary concert.

The Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band and the BG Singers Encore Group will combine forces for the performance at 2 p.m. Sunday.

The band will perform "Festival Overture," written by William Crowle to honor the village's 50 years.

The music will also follow a 1950s theme, with songs by Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles and from the 1958 movie "Gigi."

"Most of it is going to be tied in one way or another to the 50th anniversary, music that was popular in 1958," said Howard Green, the conductor and music director of the Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band.

Linda Rosen, the conductor of the BG Singers Encore, said much of the music can still be heard today and will be familiar to younger generations.

"The songs we have chosen are still vital," she said.

The one-hour program will be followed by a free ice cream social.

"It's a great way to cool off on a hot Sunday," Rosen said.

The symphonic band, which is sponsored by the village's arts commission, has been around since 2001. The BG Singers Encore, a smaller faction of the BG Singers, is sponsored by the park district.

The ice cream will be provided by KaleidoScoops of Buffalo Grove.

The concert and the ice cream social will be at the Stevenson High School Performing Arts Center, 1 Stevenson Drive, Lincolnshire.

Tickets are $5 and available at village hall, 50 Raupp Boulevard. Children under 10 are free. For more information, call (847) 459-2511.
