Mount Prospect man found dead in West Side building

A Mount Prospect man was identified as the landlord discovered beaten to death in the basement of a building he owned on Chicago's West Side.

A spokesman from the Cook County medical examiner's office said Harold Beilstein, 69, was pronounced dead at the scene about 9:15 p.m. Tuesday.

He died of blunt trauma to the head and neck and multiple injuries to his body, medical examiner officials said.

A friend of Beilstein's discovered him burned beyond recognition in the basement of the complex he owned on the 5300 block of West Division Street about 7 p.m., authorities said.

Beilsten had been missing since Monday, and a missing person report was filed with the Mount Prospect Police Department, authorities said.

Police still are investigating the slaying.
