Kitchen fire damages Lake Barrington home
Smoke damage left a Lake Barrington home uninhabitable after a fire started in or near a dishwasher Tuesday morning.
Wauconda firefighters were called to 26791 Lakeview Drive at 10:04 a.m. after the homeowner came home and saw smoke coming from the chimney and ridge vent of his roof, Wauconda Fire Department Capt. Joe Arizzi said.
The man did not enter the home but called fire officials instead.
This prevented oxygen from entering the home, which would have caused further damage, Arizzi said.
Wauconda firefighters used a thermal imaging camera to find the source of the fire in the kitchen, finding flames 3 to 4 feet above the dishwasher, which was encased in a center island.
Firefighters were able to get the fire under control in less than 15 minutes and extinguish it with very little water, Arizzi said.
However, the house did suffer water damage because fire melted one of the water valves associated with the dishwasher.
No one was injured. Round Lake, Nunda and Lake Zurich fire department assisted Wauconda on the scene, while Grayslake fire officials manned the station. Fire damages were estimated to be about $250,000 to $300,000 due to extensive smoke damage.
Fire officials are investigating.
