QBs struggle on hot day

Both quarterbacks were underwhelming in a steamy noon practice Monday.

Kyle Orton, who worked with the first team, and Rex Grossman, who directed the second unit, were each intercepted once. Rookie Zack Bowman stole a Grossman toss intended for Brandon Rideau but overthrown, and Corey Graham picked an Orton aerial destined for Greg Olsen, who was surrounded by defenders.

Each quarterback also had a pass swatted at the line of scrimmage in a three-play sequence by defensive end Mark Anderson.

Shortly after the interceptions, Orton showed excellent touch, lofting a TD pass to Mark Bradley in the back corner of the end zone. Grossman went 4-for-4 in 7-on-7, but both quarterbacks struggled when the defense blitzed, either holding the ball too long or throwing it away out of bounds.

Both two-minute drills were disappointing offensively. Orton completed 2 of 7 passes and failed to get into field-goal range. Grossman completed 4 of 5 passes, but he was sacked once and fumbled a snap from center. Mike Hass made a leaping grab of a sideline route and deftly touched both feet in bounds for a 13-yard gain that helped set up a 50-yard field goal by Robbie Gould.
