Rail is long-term answer to road congestion
Our trustees have spent $10,000 of our money to help Barrington and other poorly informed municipalities fight the Canadian National Railway purchase of the EJ&E Railroad.
It appears they have no idea of the transportation system in this country. There are studies that show congestion, on the highways, to increase 40 percent by 2020. There are also studies showing rail congestion on the rise during this same period.
Now let us look at the Brewster Creek Industrial Park. Buildings with 500,000 or more square feet, with only doors to receive truck shipments and not one foot of rail in the park.
How do you get to the park? Route 59 is heavily traveled today with trucks and auto congestion. Accidents at the intersection of Route 59 and Stearns Road are numerous.
One rail car removes three trucks from the highway and is three times more fuel efficient and has a better safety record.
All of the towns that have a railroad running through them should look at the long-range effect and not just today or tomorrow.
