Orton looks strong as he works with starting offense
Kyle Orton's first training-camp practice with the starting offense went smoothly, as he completed a high percentage of his passes.
He did, however, appear to hold the ball a little too long on some of his throws.
During the last 11-on-11 passing drill, Orton completed 5 of 6 passes, including a deep sideline pass to Brandon Lloyd and a crossing route to Marty Booker on back-to-back plays.
Rex Grossman, working with the second team for most of the day, threaded a deep seam route to rookie tight end Kellen Davis but 2 plays later fumbled the snap in his final 11-on-11 session.
Both players launched long TD passes to Rashied Davis in 11-on-11 work.
Offensive coordinator Ron Turner has been impressed with Orton's maturation from a strong-armed thrower as a rookie in 2005 to a more polished passer.
"He's gone from a guy who, when he came in as a rookie, was just a fastball thrower," Turner said. "Everything he threw was full speed, but he's really improved his touch, he's improved his poise, he's improved his accuracy.
"He's become much more of an all-around quarterback instead of just a thrower."
Orton has increased his maneuverability by reducing his weight from around 240 at one time to under 220 and by working on foot-agility drills.
