How to help a child start school on right foot

Each year the department distributes backpacks filled with school supplies to needy children in an effort to help under-resourced parents get their children ready for a new school year.

Donations of backpacks, whiteout, highlighters, permanent markers, erasers, pencil pouches, scissors, colored pencils, red pens, book covers, glue sticks, black pens, compasses, blue pens and composition notebooks will be accepted next week.

Between Monday and Aug. 1 you can drop them off between 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. at the Wheeling Township office, 1616 N. Arlington Heights Road, Arlington Heights.

According to Township representatives, they are in particular need of backpacks. Volunteers will sort, pack and distribute all of the collected supplies before the beginning of school.
