Congratulations go to Matt McClure of Bartlett who was the Central Region winner in the age 12-13 boys division for the U.S. Junior Olympic Basketball Skills Competition. Matt will be in Chicago July this week for the national finals at University of Illinois at Chicago. The finalists represent the event's top 72 athletes out of more than 1.7 million competitors.

• Communication Concepts Inc., publishers of business communication reports and special reports on topics such as writing feature articles and Web publishing, awarded Sylvia Westgard its APEX 2008 Award of Excellence in the Design and Layout category for her artwork on the "Celebrate the Memories" book, honoring 25-year employees and retirees of Township High School District 214. APEX 2008, the 20th annual Awards for Publication Excellence, bases the awards on excellence in graphic design, quality of editorial content and the success of the entry in conveying the message and achieving overall communication effectiveness.

• Premier Credit Union with offices in Palatine, Schaumburg and Northbrook, awarded $24,000 in scholarships to student members, chosen on the basis of academic achievement and community involvement. Winners of the $2,000 scholarships included: Lindsay M. Bentivegna, a Palatine High School graduate and student at Thomas M. Cooley Law School; Erik R. Bostrom, a Schaumburg High School graduate and graduate student in education curriculum, technology and education reform at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; Ashley M. Darnall, a Schaumburg High School student planning to attend Northwestern University as an English major; Sarah I. Long, a Palatine High School student planning to attend Miami University of Ohio or Loyola University to study special education and English; Chelsea E. Roseri, a Fremd High School student planning to attend the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign or the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, to study business/finance; Jason R. SIebert, a Buffalo Grove High School student planning to study biology/molecular biology at the University of Illinois; and Ann L. Wedell, a Palatine High School student with plans to study the sciences at St. Olaf College or the University of Dayton.

• Palatine native Jonathan Rimler, a third-year Rosalind Franklin University Chicago Medical School student, was named to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society for 2008-2009. To be considered for this award, the candidate's scholastic qualification must rank in the upper 25 percent of his or her class and the individual must have shown promise of becoming a leader in the medical profession. Rimler received his undergraduate degree from the University of Illinois. He doubled majored in molecular and cellular biology and graduated with highest distinction in chemistry. While in medical school, he has served on the executive board of the American Medical Association and as the Chicago Medical School representative for the Office of Student Representatives. He also started a community-based high school mentoring program. Rimler will graduate in 2009, with plans to pursue a career in surgery.
