Rain dampens Germanfest spirit

A little rain never hurt anyone. And it certainly was not going to keep Lombard resident Larry Burrah from enjoying his brat.

"The way I see it, I've got enough mustard on here that the bun's going to be soggy anyway," Burrah said Saturday as he made his way from the brat stand to the covered tent at Sacred Heart Parish's 41st annual Germanfest.

His wife, Sharon, couldn't disagree more, using her hands and napkins to shield her German delicacy from the downpour.

"I prefer for my beer to soften the bun on the way down," she said. "But what are you gonna do?"

The Burrahs were among only a few folks to brave the early hours of the fest's second day, leaving the Tilt-a-Whirl and Pharoah's Fury rides idle for much of the afternoon before skies cleared later.

Those that did make it out, however, were treated to presentations by the Lombard police department, an afternoon performance by Hirsch and a dunk tank. The evening events featured bingo and casino gambling and a beer and wine tasting event.

This year's highlight, however, is today's first ever "Early Bird Dinner," complete with authentic German food and full service at noon.

"We'll be here for that," said Lombard resident Mary Dever. "My kids can't get enough sauerkraut and potato pancakes so they're excited too."

The $5,000 raffle winner will be announced at 9 p.m. Sunday but the winner does not need to be present.

The fest continues from noon to 9 p.m. today at Maple and Elizabeth streets in Lombard.
