Lisle man on life support after nearly drowning in pool
A 38-year-old Lisle man remains hospitalized after nearly drowning in his apartment complex pool.
Lisle Police Sgt. Ron Wilke said Gnaneshwar Manumari was teaching himself to swim at about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the pool at Lakeside Apartments, 4800 Lake Trail Drive, where he resides.
When he swam too far into the deep end, witnesses said, he struggled and went under.
Wilke said videotape evidence showed several people were swimming in the shallow end of the pool at the time the man went under, but no one assumed anything was wrong for several minutes.
A group of teenagers ran over and alerted a group of three adults who jumped in and pulled the man from the bottom of the pool, Wilke said.
A short time earlier, Wilke said, Manumari told the teens he was teaching himself how to swim. A self-help swimming book was also found in his car.
One of the adults performed CPR on the victim and 911 was called, Wilke said. Police continued CPR on the victim when they arrived on the scene, followed by paramedics when they arrived, Wilke added.
After getting a pulse, paramedics took the victim to Edward Hospital in Naperville, Wilke said, before he was airlifted to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood in critical condition.
Authorities Thursday afternoon said Manumari was on life support but the hospital would not release information on his condition, citing privacy laws.
