Briefs: Model high school named

West Chicago High School has been selected as one of 17 schools across the country to act as a model for civic education by the Civic Mission for Schools. The Maryland-based agency initiated a federal drive to instill the importance of civic education in all schools. West Chicago is the only school in Illinois to be selected. Bike safety check slated:

The Village of Lombard's trails committee and the Chicagoland Bicycle Federation will sponsor a booth at the Taste of Lombard from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. A representative will be available to talk about trails and safe cycling. Anyone who rides their bike can receive a complimentary bicycle safety check and receive a small gift.

Free consumer clinic on tap:

The Citizens' Utility Board will offer a free consumer clinic from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Bloomingdale Horizon Senior Living Community, 160 W. Lake St., Bloomingdale. Participants will receive free compact fluorescent light bulbs. Those who attend also should bring their phone bills to be analyzed by CUB experts, who will offer money-saving tips and advice. Warrenville performance:

Bopology, a Chicago-style swing band, will perform at 7 p.m. July 16 at the Bob Walters Commons near the library, 28W751 Stafford Place. The show features swing, jazz and Frank Sinatra tunes. Admission is free and no registration is required. In case of rain, contact the library at (630) 393-1171 for information. The event is part of the summer "Concerts on the Commons" series presented by the library in cooperation with Warrenville Park District. Vets Awareness Day set:

Warrenville VFW Post 8081, 3S371 Mignin Drive, will sponsor a Veterans Awareness Day from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday. There will be food, beverages and free ice cream for the kids, as well as military displays. For details, contact Jeff Spiewak at (630) 674-8997.

Families needed for students:

PAX is interviewing area families interested in opening their homes for international high school students for the next academic year. Host families are asked to provide meals, a warm supportive environment and a place to sleep and study. Anyone who is interested can contact Janice Corey or PAX headquarters at (800) 555-6211.

New park district director:

The Carol Stream Park District will host a reception on Monday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. to welcome Dave Haring, the district's new director of recreation. Haring will take over the duties of Rick Hanetho, who departed in April to become the executive director of the Northbrook Park District. The reception will be held at the Aldrin Community Center, 391 Illini Drive.
