Briefs: Money raised for research

Team Cosmonaut, formed by supporters of Laura Hudgens, a Des Plaines native who was diagnosed with breast cancer last year at age 26, raised more than $112,000 for breast cancer research in the Avon Walk, sister Karen Menis said. All 48 members walked the 39 mile journey on May 31 and Laura made a keynote speech at the opening ceremony. The team received more than 1,200 donations. The team is beginning planning for a return to the walk next year.

Talent show in Barrington

Barrington is giving its residents the opportunity to show off their talents and creativity. The village is hosting its first annual community talent show from 6 to 9 p.m. July 7 and 8 at the downtown Brat Tent. The show is open to both individuals and groups of all ages. The show will feature a variety of acts, including singing, dancing, skits, musical instruments, magic, gymnastics, pet tricks, juggling and stand-up comedy. Volunteers sought for race

Schaumburg police are seeking volunteers to help with a Men's Pro Stage 2 Road Race their village is co-hosting with Elk Grove Village Aug. 2. These volunteers will monitor barricades along the route and will observe the course and report problems and safety concerns. Volunteers will not direct any traffic. Volunteers must be 18 years old or older, attend a training session prior to race day, provide their own transportation to their assigned locations and be able to assist for four to five hours between 1 and 7 p.m. Aug. 2. A volunteer application can be downloaded, and should be returned to the police department as soon as possible

Fundraiser for local mom

A fundraiser is being held July 19 in honor of Barrington resident Paulina Messina. A mother of two, Messina was diagnosed with stage 4 medullary thyroid cancer in 2006 and is now unable to work. The fundraiser picnic, scheduled for 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., will be held at Citizen's Park in Barrington. The picnic, which will feature live music, food, games and face painting, is open to the public. Group offers 4th flags

To mark the Fourth of July, members of the Northwest Suburban Detachment of the Marine Corps League will distribute miniature flags from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday at the Wal-Mart Super Center, 901 Meacham Road, Elk Grove Village. American, Marine Corps and MIA-POW flags will be available. There is no charge for the flags, but donations will be accepted. All funds collected will be used to assist area members of the Marine Corps family and veterans' programs. Recently the detachment has aided Chicago-area Marine Corps Reservists now serving in Iraq and others slated to be deployed to Iraq.
