Briefs: Hikes offered at Lake Co. preserves

Trade in your old flag
If you have a worn U.S. flag and live in the 51st House District, you can trade it for a new one this month at the office of state Rep. Ed Sullivan Jr. of Mundelein. Old flags will be properly disposed of as part of the free service. Sullivan's office is at 506 E. Hawley St., Mundelein.
New park commissioner
Jim Ballowe, a 16-year resident of Vernon Hills, is the newest member of the Vernon Hills Park District Board. Ballowe was appointed by the board last week. He replaces longtime Commissioner Kelli Garvanian, who resigned in March. He will serve the remainder of her term and the seat will be up for election in April. Ballowe, is the superintendent of revenue facilities for the Lake County Forest Preserve District and has 30 years of experience in the park and recreation field. Ballowe said his enthusiasm for the outdoors lead him to became a candidate for the seat.
Talent show in Barrington
Barrington is giving its residents the opportunity to show off their talents and creativity. The village is hosting its annual community talent show from 6 to 9 p.m. July 7 and 8 at the downtown Brat Tent. The show is open to both individuals and groups of all ages. The show will feature a variety of acts, including singing, dancing, skits, musical instruments, magic, gymnastics, pet tricks, juggling and stand-up comedy. >Fundraiser set
A fundraiser is being held July 19 in honor of Barrington resident Paulina Messina. A mother of two, Messina was diagnosed with stage 4 medullary thyroid cancer in 2006 and is now unable to work. The fundraiser picnic, scheduled for 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., will be held at Citizen's Park in Barrington. The picnic, which will feature live music, food, games and face painting, is open to the public.
