Recruit hit, killed by train near North Chicago

A 22-year-old naval recruit is dead after being struck by a train near the Great Lakes Naval Training Center near North Chicago.

Metra spokeswoman Meg Reile said the commuter train was running as an express to the Waukegan train yard early Saturday when it hit the recruit as he was crossing the tracks in Highwood.

Reile said the train was going between 50 and 70 miles per hour. Lake County Coroner Richard Keller said the man died at the scene. His name isn't being released pending notification of family.
