Briefs: Info on flood cleanup

Business owners are invited to an informational meeting to discuss the recent flooding in northern Lake County from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday at the Antioch Golf Course, located at Route 59 and Grass Lake Road. The meeting will be hosted by Lake County officials, along with representatives from Lake County Emergency Management, Stormwater Management, the Fox Waterway Agency and others. Officials will provide information on disaster assistance, flood mitigation efforts and cleanup efforts. Business owners will also have an opportunity to ask questions. Last chance to sound off

The final community engagement session of Navigate 34 is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday at Antioch Upper Grade School, 800 Highview Drive. This will be the final opportunity for community members to weigh in on recommendations for the District 34 school board before they are presented on July 15. Participants will be asked to assess what they feel to be priorities for District 34 and assign an "urgency" level to each of the recommendations. Navigate 34 has been meeting since January and studying many of the issues and challenges facing the school district including staffing, enrollment and facilities.

Lake Villa fest rescheduled

Lake Villa's summer celebration was one of the casualties of this month's heavy rain. The village has rescheduled the event at Lehmann Park for Aug. 30 with a rain date of Aug. 31. Fireworks are expected to begin around 9 p.m. and during the day there will be demonstrations and exhibits from the Lake Villa police, fire and rescue squads. The village's annual Cardboard Boat Race has been rescheduled for 11 a.m. on Aug. 2, during Lake Villa Days. For more information, visit www.lake-villa.org.

Nature walk Saturday

Barrington's Citizens for Conservation hosts its first nature walk of the summer at 8 a.m. Saturday. David Johnson, recently retired from the Wild Bird Center in Fox River Grove, will lead the walk to look for butterflies and late breeding birds. The walk starts at Citizens for Conservation headquarters at 459 W. Route 22 in Barrington. Those who attend are encouraged to bring binoculars. For more information or to RSVP call (847) 382-7283.

To celebrate the first day of summer, and also raise funds for a local family in need, Barrington's Tropical Smoothie Café is offering free drinks Saturday. The first 500 customers who come in wearing flip-flop sandals will receive a free 24-oz Jetty Punch smoothie. Saturday also wraps up the store's monthlong fundraiser for Camp Sunshine in Maine. Using money raised between May 23 and Saturday, the store is sending a Wheeling family to Camp Sunshine, which provides a retreat for children coping with life-threatening illnesses, including cancer, kidney disease and lupus. Tropical Smoothie Café is located at 500 N. Hough St.
