Big Brown wasn't the biggest story
After watching the Belmont Stakes on television on June 7, I was struck by the way the news media gave practically no attention to the winning horse. The coverage was all about Big Brown.
I went to the Sports section of my Sunday June 8 Daily Herald to read the Cinderella story of the horse who, against 38 to 1 odds, won the race. The front page featured a large photo of Big Brown and a story, which was continued on page 7, explaining how he ran out of gas. There was barely a mention of the horse that won.
Okay, I get it. That was a big story. On page 7, there was another photo of Big Brown and a separate article about his jockey, Kent Desormeaux.
However, there were no pictures of Da' Tara, no mention of his overcoming great odds to lead the race from start to finish, no kudos for the winning jockey. Why wasn't that a big story? It seems to me this was another example of the media focusing on the "bad news". Let's give more coverage to the "good news," concerning people as well as horses!
