Briefs: Vernon Hills path compromise

The issue of installing a paved path through a Vernon Hills subdivision has been resolved. The village board Tuesday agreed to eliminate several sections of a public trail that was to have connected Writer Estates with other neighborhoods along Route 45. The path was called for in the original approval of the subdivision, but some residents were concerned about its public nature. Village staff feared residents would mow or otherwise use a required 30-foot buffer to Indian Creek beyond the trail. Instead, the developer will install a limestone border to delineate the spaces. The money the developer would have spent on the path will be put in a special fund controlled by the village for public improvements.

Tour Libertyville

Libertyville is taking promotion to a new level by marketing itself as a tourist destination. Brochures touting village attractions already have been placed at the Lake Forest Oasis on the Tri-State Tollway, and are planned for local hotels and other outlets. Radio and print ads also are planned. This is more targeted than the locally based "Shop Libertyville" campaign, and is intended to draw people who may be staying close to home because of the economy. The intent is "to keep Libertyville in the back of their heads, especially now with what they call 'staycations,'" said Heather Rowe, the village's economic development director. Besides shopping, the campaign will promote outdoor activities, such as biking.
