Think before you comment

I was absolutely appalled at some of the online comments left about the Cary man who fell 12 feet from his roof down to the ground early Sunday morning.

As of this writing, we didn't know the circumstances surrounding why he was on the roof at 4:30 a.m.

But reading the comments posted to the story, many readers already assume the young man in his early 20s was up to no good.

"Maybe he heard the drinks were on the house," wrote one.

"Stupid is as stupid does - he did," wrote another.

I don't think this is funny at all.

The young man, found semi-unconscious, was airlifted to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital as a precautionary measure because officials didn't know if he hit the cement or the grass.

I think this young man and his family have gone through enough and the last thing they need are people making snide comments about the accident before they know the full story.

I don't think it's ever a good idea to joke about someone else's misfortune.

But some people do, and to them I say if you're going to, please wait until you have all the facts before posting your comments.

Get 'em while they're hot: Energy efficient light bulbs are now available gratis in Algonquin.

You can pick them up at village hall or in the public works building during regular business hours, says Assistant Village Manager Jenna Kollings.

There are 5,000 bulbs available and the village is handing out two per household as part of its initiative to be greener.

The village received the bulbs through the Metropolitan Mayor's Caucus, which Village President John Schmitt belongs to, along with 272 Illinois mayors.

The group received a grant to purchase the devices, called compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs.

Not only do they last longer than standard light bulbs, but they also shave costs from your electric bills.

For more information about the bulbs, call village hall at (847) 658-2700.

Save the date: As a reminder, please don't forget about the upcoming "Lean on Me" fundraiser that's being held Friday to support the three Algonquin families from the Tunbridge subdivision whose children were either injured in or died in a car accident last fall.

Two Marian Central Catholic High School students were killed and two others were injured in a car accident when their car collided with a dump truck on Haligus Road in Grafton Township.

The Grys family lost Alexander, 14, in the crash while his sister Eva, a senior at the school, suffered multiple injuries.

Their neighbor, William Schlau, a freshman at Marian Central, also was hurt in the accident.

Taylor Wozniak, 17, of Lake in the Hills was also killed in the accident that occurred as the group headed home from final exams.

The fundraiser, organized by a group Tunbridge neighbors, will be at the Golf Club of Illinois in Algonquin and includes a golf outing, car wash, and silent and live auctions.

The golf outing begins at 1 p.m. and includes a gift bag, a barbecue buffet, door prizes, a golf cart and an hourlong open bar. It costs $125 per player.

The outing is followed by the silent auction that starts at 6 p.m. and a live auction, which kicks off at 8 p.m.

For more information or to donate an item for the auction, please send an e-mail to gmkowalski55@comcast.net.
