Briefs: Teens can go green
The Friends of the Fox River will offer a two-week summer day camp for area high school students. The event is free; registration is still open. The camp runs Wednesday through July 2. Participants will learn what it takes to keep our environment healthy and then take actions to protect and improve the health of local ecosystems. Traveling in vans, participants will visit local resources and meet the professionals who manage them. Breakfast and lunch is provided. Child car-seat check
Sherman Hospital in Elgin and Kane County SafeKids will co-sponsor a free car-seat safety check from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Kimball and South Grove streets in Elgin. Certified child passenger safety technicians will be on hand to inspect safety seats installed in vehicles and provide instruction to ensure the safest use. Participants also should bring their children, if possible, and the owner's manual for the seat. No appointments are needed. Call (847) 429-5176.
Free open gyms all summer
The Elgin Police Department school liaison program are sponsoring a free open gym program for kids 8 to 16 until Aug. 8. At U-46 schools from 5:30 to 9 p.m. kids can play basketball, kickball, soccer, floor hockey, swimming or do arts and crafts. Speakers will give presentations on baking, bike safety, gang awareness and prevention, life skills and drug and alcohol awareness. A waiver form is required.
