No drugs or alcohol in fatal McHenry Co. crash
McHenry County sheriff's police ticketed an 18-year-old Algonquin woman for improper lane usage Monday, ending an eight-month investigation into a crash that killed her younger brother and a friend as they drove home from school.
Eva Grys, 2121 Burnham Court, is scheduled to appear in court July 9 on the traffic citation stemming from the Oct. 26 collision between her car and a dump truck on Haligus Road, just south of Lakewood Road, in Grafton Township.
The crash claimed the life of Grys' sibling Alex Grys, 14, and Taylor Wozniak, 17, of Lake in the Hills. Eva Grys and a third passenger, 14-year-old William Schlau, were injured in the collision.
Sheriff's Deputy Matt Matusek said the length of the investigation was because of investigators awaiting the toxicology results and testing of a data recorder in Grys' vehicle. Toxicology, he said, showed neither alcohol nor drugs played any part in the crash.
Sheriff's police also determined that there was no evidence to warrant more serious charges such as reckless driving or reckless homicide. Excessive speed did not appear to be a factor, Matusek said.
"This is the only charge that is applicable," he added.
The crash occurred as Grys drove her brother and two friends, all students at Marian Central Catholic High School in Woodstock, south on Haligus Road. For reasons still unknown, Matusek said, the car veered onto the right shoulder. When Grys steered back onto the roadway, police said, her 2003 Honda Accord swerved into the northbound lane and into the path of the oncoming truck.
