Driver ticketed for crash which killed Palatine couple

A Crystal Lake man was given six traffic citations this week in relation to a crash that killed a Palatine couple last year.

Barrington Hills Sgt. Ron Reidel said Timothy Swanson, 22, was cited for improper lane usage, improper overtaking on the left, disobeying a no-passing zone, following too closely, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and driving too fast for conditions in the crash that killed Guillermo and Rafaela Aguirre.

According to police, Swanson was westbound on Route 62 about 11:30 p.m. Sept. 29 when he tried to pass a car and crashed head-on into the Aguirre's Saturn. Both Aguirres were pronounced dead at the scene.

The Palatine couple were on their way home from a youth group outing having to do with their church, Maranatha Hispanic Seventh Day Adventist Church in Elgin.

Three of their four children were with them at the outing but left the event in a different car and were following their parents.

Reidel said a full investigation was conducted, but police found no probable cause for increased charges.

He said one reason the investigation took as long as it did was because police were waiting for Swanson to recover from the injuries he suffered in the crash before interviewing him.

Police said neither alcohol nor drugs were a factor in the crash.

Swanson is scheduled to appear in court July 24 in Rolling Meadows.
