Dist. 87 wants your opinion on priorities

Rather than simply telling residents about the state of the district, Glenbard High School District 87 Superintendent Mike Meissen wants to discuss it with them.

And he wants them to discuss it among themselves.

His brief, as in really brief, report about the district on June 23 will precede an evening of roundtable discussions over the five key points in the new strategic plan.

"We want anybody who has an interest in our schools to attend," district spokeswoman Peg Mannion said.

That includes residents, business owners and community members.

The presentation and discussion is set from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the district's administration center, 596 Crescent Blvd. in Glen Ellyn.

When officials decided to update the district's strategic plan, they used elements of the former design and added new ones gleaned from the district community. What they're presenting for discussion is a set of five overarching priorities, which are broken down into measurable goals, Mannion explained.

"For example, if you say you're going to improve reading, how are you going to show that," she said.

The five priorities are:

• Create paths to success for every student aligning standards, assessment, and instruction.

• Foster a supportive, safe environment that inspires learning and encourages interaction with the school.

• Strengthen home, school, community partnerships.

• Create a positive, collaborative work environment dedicated to continuous improvement.

• Make efficient, effective, equitable use of resources that are essential to student success.
