Wheaton man killed in ATV crash in northern Wisconsin

Authorities in northern Wisconsin are still investigating what caused an all-terrain vehicle crash that killed a 75-year-old Wheaton man.

Everrett Saucerman was killed about 5 p.m. Tuesday in Lac du Flambeau while using a four-wheeler to haul a trailer full of grass clippings. Lac du Flambeau Tribal Police Capt. Bob Brandenburg said Saucerman was approaching an intersection on Highway 47 when he lost control of the ATV and crashed.

The ATV rolled and Saucerman suffered severe head injuries, Brandenburg said. He was taken to a nearby hospital but later was flown to a hospital in Wausau, Wis., where he was pronounced dead.

Brandenburg said an autopsy is slated for today, and investigators are hopeful they can determine what caused the crash.

Investigators say they believe Saucerman may have driven off the side of the road and overcorrected or suffered some type of medical emergency that caused the crash.

"There are skids from him losing control," Brandenburg said. "But he did have a medical card with him that identified several heart medications he was taking."

Brandenburg said Saucerman was about 500 feet from the driveway of the vacation home where he and his wife were staying. He said Saucerman was taking the grass clippings to another property for disposal when the crash occurred.

Because the state highway is a busy thoroughfare, Brandenburg said he believes the crash was discovered fairly soon after it occurred.

Attempts to reach the family for funeral details were unsuccessful.
