They need somebody to lean on

Don't forget about the upcoming "Lean on Me" fundraiser that's being held to support the three Algonquin families from the Tunbridge subdivision whose children were either injured in or died in a car accident last fall.

Two Marian Central Catholic High School students were killed and two others were injured in a car accident when their car collided with a dump truck on Haligus Road in Grafton Township.

The Grys family lost Alexander, 14, in the crash while his sister Eva, a senior at the school, suffered multiple injuries.

Their neighbor William Schlau, a freshman at Marian Central, also was hurt in the accident.

Taylor Wozniak, 17, of Lake in the Hills was also killed in the accident that occurred as the group headed home from final exams.

The fundraiser, organized by a group Tunbridge neighbors, will be at the Golf Club of Illinois in Algonquin and includes a golf outing, car wash, and silent and live auctions.

The golf outing begins at 1 p.m. and includes a swag bag, a barbecue buffet, door prizes, a golf cart and an hourlong open bar. It costs $125 per player.

The outing is followed by the silent auction that starts at 6 p.m. and a live auction, which kicks off at 8 p.m.

For information or to donate an item for the auction, please send an e-mail to gmkowalski55@comcast.net.

Let the countdown begin: Only nine more days before Algonquin's annual Conservation Community Day.

This year's theme is "Conserve and Preserve - It's What Nature Deserves."

On Conservation Community Day, you'll learn how to conserve resources while preserving the environment.

Representatives from local green organizations also will be on hand for the free event.

As you probably already know, Algonquin has been on the green scene since before Al Gore made it vogue.

The village has programs that specifically deal with water conservation, landscaping and development and recycling and waste management.

The event will be held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. June 20 at the Woods Creek bike path, between Bunker Hill Drive and Woodscreek Lane.

Sage advice for seniors: On July 15 and Aug. 5, Algonquin is offering free transportation and educational seminars to residents who are 55 years old and older.

The village's senior bus will pick them up at their homes and drive them to programs in Lake in the Hills.

The first program, entitled "Who gets Grandma's yellow pie plate?" deals with passing on items not typically considered, such as dishes and baseball gloves, when you're writing a will.

The second program is all about protecting yourself from identity theft.

To reserve your seat and your place for the seminars, call Michelle Weber one week before the scheduled date. That phone number is (847) 658-2700.

"Hopefully the incentive of the free ride will get people to go," Weber said.
