Now at Booth 32: 'Proper etiquette for refusing to take a Breathalyzer'

Another month, another Cedric Benson arrest.

Either this is the most persecuted man in Texas or the most irresponsible man on the Bears.

As you know by now, Benson suffered his monthly arrest Saturday, charged with drunken driving and declining to take a Breathalyzer and blood test.

Still pending are charges in his May 3 arrest for boating while intoxicated and resisting arrest.

Sort of makes you anxious for the first week of July to hear what authorities here or there might allege Benson did next.

Benson attorney Sam Bassett was quoted as saying of the latest episode, "It's obviously not good to be arrested so soon after (the boating incident.)"

No kidding.

Look, I always have been for giving professional athletes, second, third and fourth chances ... as many as it takes.

Until, that is, the player's off-field behavior makes it more difficult for the team to win games. Benson officially exhausted my tolerance this time, though that doesn't matter.

What the Bears think does. If Bears general manager Jerry Angelo resists releasing Benson, speculation could be management already has plans to exploit his alleged transgressions at next year's fan convention.

Even as this weekend's Bears Expo is ongoing at Soldier Field, a schedule of seminars might be planned for next year's event.

Benson: "All the good things that can happen at 3 a.m."

Lance Briggs: "How to flee after crashing a Lamborghini."

Brian Urlacher: "The sanctity of a signed contract."

Angelo: "How to conduct your own investigation."

Bears alumni will be invited to participate. Tank Johnson could speak on his personal "P" words -- "Pit bulls, pubs and pistols."

All this is subject to further arrests of Bears players -- current and former -- being executed.

Judging by his recent legal entanglements, Benson might be asked to conduct as many as a half-dozen sessions.

"Appropriate attire for a night in jail" ... "Proper etiquette for refusing to take a Breathalyzer" ... "Boats and rubber duckies."

Actually, at this pace next year's Bears convention could be renamed Benson Expo now that he has tied it up: Two arrests apiece in college and the NFL.

The most compelling question for Bears fans is whether Benson will attend next year's convention as a current member of the team or as an alumnus.

Much of that will depend on whether Benson is convicted of any of the charges against him, including any future charges.

(Considering Benson has been arrested on water and land, his legal team might want to keep him out of airplanes so he can't hit for the cycle.)

Seriously, Bears management will have to decide whether to subscribe to "innocent until proven guilty" or just dump Benson immediately.

"It is what it is," basically is how the Bears are responding, to Benson's latest alleged transgression, along with being "disappointed."

The Bears' final determination likely will depend upon whether they believe Benson can help them win a Super Bowl.

If he can, they'll support him as they did Johnson. If not, they'll replace him with somebody they believe will produce on the field.

Welcome to the NFL, Matt Forte. Benson's job is yours if you behave yourself, as long as you perform well enough.

Meanwhile, folks, brace yourselves: July's allegations are only three weeks away.
